Among the Shia rituals, the Muharram mourning ritual has had an important place throughout Shia history and can be considered as a distinct feature of Shia as the religion of the followers of Ahl al-Bayt. Using a descriptive-analytical methodology, this article examines the development of the Muharram mourning ritual. According to the findings of this research, the Muharram mourning ritual is in principle rooted in the tradition of Ahl al-Bayt and has been confirmed and emphasized by the Imams. But throughout history, there have been many changes in the forms and ways of mourning. Most of these changes go back to the Safavid era and the periods following it. Some of these developments are based on the Imams' traditions the legitimacy of which is beyond any doubt. But others have been criticized by Shia scholars in some way. Muharram mourning has gradually become one of the most important Shia rituals taking place in public places as well as in especial places dedicated to it.
