Whenever the Hijri year appears, Muslims are reminded with great sadness of the sufferings of the Prophet's family and what the Umayyad army did to them in terms of killing, abusing and mutilating. Muslims in most parts of the world get preparation to express their feelings about this bloody event, especially on the tenth day of Muharram. This expression of feelings of affection and pain towards the death of Imam Husain (peace be upon him) is not a new matter. Its history goes back to early Islam. The Messenger of Allah (may God bless him and his family) and his honorable companions were the first to weep for Imam Husain (peace be upon him). The infallible imams (peace be upon them) mourned for their martyred grandfather, secretly and publicly. The scope of the mourning rituals for Imam Husain (peace be upon him) expanded during the era of the Buyid family in Iraq and Iran. Finally, the Husaini mourning became wide-spread under the patronage of the Safavid state. As a result, the loyalists of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) gained freedom to express their feelings and commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain (peace be upon him).
