In verse 34 of Surah Nisa, the Qur'an speaks about how to manage the family based on the principle of comprehensiveness and response to human guidance needs. Based on the two privileges (which one is granted whereas the other is acquired privileges) of men over women, it has entrusted the guardianship of the family to men. This article first proves the necessity of having a manager in the house by using the division method, and then by analyzing the opinions of the Qur’anic exegetes, it takes the term "qiwam" in the verse to mean the management and guardianship of men over the family. Considering the generalization of the reason stated in the verse and the necessity of chastity for women, it was emphasized that the scope of men's guardianship goes beyond the sphere of home and family and includes all social fields. As the discussion continues, the viewpoints that emphasize the gifted superiority or the acquired superiority of men over women are criticized.
Keywords: Guardianship, family management, family system, gifted superiority, acquired superiority
